milestones

According to ivillage.com, these are some milestones most babies should be hitting by about one year.

Let's see where Jack is...
  • Says "ma-ma" and "da-da" discriminately - Umm, sort of. He says, "mamamamama" and "dadadadada" to me and to John, respectively. I think that counts, right?
  • Understands "no" - I'm pretty sure he "understands" the word no. He usually chooses to ignore it.
  • Claps hands - Sometimes.
  • Waves bye-bye - Yes, when prompted.
  • May take one to two naps daily - Yup.
  • Triples birth weight and is 29 to 32 inches long - Let's see... he was 9.5 pounds at birth. So, he should be 28.5 now? He hasn't been weighed since his 9 month check. We'll find out on April 5th when he goes in for his one year, but I won't be surprised if he's darn close to that. I have no idea how "tall" he is.
  • Bangs two cubes together - Loves to bang things together, and on the table or floor.
  • Puts objects into containers and then takes them out - Yes.
  • Voluntarily lets objects go - Yes. Especially off his highchair tray when eating.
  • Shakes head "no" - Absolutely. And he also nods "yes."
  • Has fun opening and closing cabinet doors - Yes.
  • Crawls well - Finally, yes. He still army crawls once in a while, but usually crawls or...
  • "Cruises" furniture - All the time.
  • Walks with adult help - Loves to walk. He's also standing on his own for short periods. I think we're close to solo walking.
  • "Dances" to music - This guy is a dancing machine. He is constantly grooving. I'm pretty sure he has a soundtrack playing in his head non-stop.
  • Interested in books and may identify some things - We read together several times a day, including before bed. The Boy loves books. He does point to some things, but it's more of a "what's that?" kind of pointing.
  • May understand some simple commands - This one is hard to gauge. The Boy is so headstrong. It's tough to tell whether he gets it, and is choosing to ignore it, or if he's just oblivious.
  • Fearful of strangers - Eh. Not so much. Maybe this will come? He definitely prefers Mom or Dad or a family member.
  • Shares toys but wants them back - Not big into sharing at this point. Unless you consider taking toys away from others as "sharing."
  • May form attachment to an item - Totally attached to paci and his blankies. Does that count?
  • Pushes away what he doesn't want - Yup.
  • Prefers to push, pull and dump items - Loves to knock over towers, pull things out of cupboards, dump out toys.
  • Pulls off hat and socks - He leaves his socks on, but is into taking hats off.
  • Understands use of certain objects - Yes. He is learning cause and effect. He loves to press buttons on the remote. He knows that the yellow button (pause) makes the TV stop and go. He knows how to press the button on my iPhone to make it light up (he's even unlocked it a few times).
  • Tests parental responses to behavior - Yes. Every. Single. Minute. Of. The. Day.
  • Extends arm or leg when getting dressed - Getting dressed and changing diapers is a wrestling match every time. He does put his arms into sleeves without much struggle, but the rest of it is insane. I contemplate just letting him be naked every time, but then I would have to clean up pee puddles.
  • Identifies self in mirror - If by "identify," you mean admire, flirt, and preen, then yes.
I think the Boy is on track, and relatively "normal." Whatever that means!

    false alarm, people

Yesterday, everyone in my corner of the world was all a flutter about a massive blizzard that was set to hit our area starting at 1:00 Tuesday afternoon, and not letting up until late Wednesday night. Snow fall estimates of anywhere between eight to twelve inches (or more in some areas) were predicted, with heavy winds, gusting past 60 miles per hour. There were Warnings and Watches and mad rushes to the grocery store to stock up on canned goods.

Now, folks... We've seen much, much worse storms than this in our day. This is northern Minnesota. We live on the lake they call Gitche Gumee. We put our winter coats away when the temperature starts to average 35°. We frolic outside in the snow and the ice, and we scoff at negative temperatures.

Windchill of minus fifty? Pshaw! Just bring a sweater!

When I was in high school, we had a snowstorm on Halloween that dumped nearly 40 inches on us in two days. We trick-or-treated in our snowpants. That's just what we do.

And apparently, nowadays, we freak out when the weather people predict eight measly inches of snow at the end of March.

I hate to say, "I told you so," especially because it usually comes back to bite me in the ass. But, I told you so, people. I was so confident that there would be no "so-called blizzard," that I purposefully took a before photo so that I could take an after photo to show you all just how powerful this blizzard wasn't.

    Yeah.

And, I'm not saying I'm disappointed that we didn't get dumped on. Quite the contrary. I'm so ready for spring. But, I just wish the weather people could get it right -- or even just close to right -- for those of us who live near the Lake.

It's worse than the Boy Who Cried Wolf. It's the meteorologist who cried blizzard.

*Please do note that the bright pink toy in the before photo has most decidedly been blown away by the March Blizzard of '11. Clearly, this was a doozy of a storm.

    project 31 - day eighteen

Day 18. What did you do today?

Woke up with a baby mohawk.

Played with several doorknobs. The Boy is fascinated by knobs.

    Studied some botany.

Played with the knobs off of the stove (again with the knobs).

Chilled out in front of the screen saver featuring a young Jack with mustache.

Had a rousing airplane foot ride. The Boy was not convinced that this was a safe activity.

Went for a walk outside. This Boy is going to get into some mud and dirt and whoknowswhatelse once he starts walking solo. He's just itchin' to get dirty!

Ate some puffs while watching PBS. He is so not a TV-head (yet?). He sits still for about two minutes, just long enough to polish off some puffs.

He may not like to watch TV, but he sure likes to pause and un-pause TV via TiVo. Apparently, it's hilarious. Also, he looks like an extra from Grease in this photo. Jack Kenickie.

    Read a little O Magazine.

project 31 - days twelve and sixteen and seventeen

So, I skipped a few days (again). This posting every day thing is tough!

Let's just get back on track here, and we'll see how things go. Maybe thirteen, fourteen and fifteen will be bonus posts in the next few weeks.

Day 12. Write about what wears you out as a woman.

Apparently, doing a project 31 wears me out as a woman. I'm exhausted.

I have been thinking about being worn out lately. I'm not depressed. I know what that looks like on me, and I'm happy to report that I am not depressed. But I would definitely say that I'm in a funk.

The house is in disarray. I'm a few pounds heavier than I'd like to be. I'm sporting some awesome forehead acne. The Boy is in a total Momma's Boy stage. My husband is working so hard we've barely been seeing each other.

I feel like I don't accomplish anything during the day because I'm attending to the Boy non-stop. When he naps, I do fun things like eat, bathe (if I'm feeling indulgent), load the dishwasher, do laundry, brush my teeth. By the time he's in bed for the night, and I finally get some "me time," I'm too exhausted (overwhelmed) to do anything but watch American Idol (which I really don't enjoy, anyways, but I'm too apathetic to change the channel) and surf the Net.

The good news is that the last couple of days have brought sunshine into my life, both literally and figuratively. The promise of warmer weather, and the ability to finally see the end of the dark, cold winter has perked me up a bit.

    But I'm still exhausted.

If I were a celebrity, I would totally check into rehab for exhaustion. And not the exhaustion that really means "prescription pain killer addiction." The exhaustion that means "I'm exhausted."

I don't even really know why I'm exhausted, other than being a Mom is exhausting. That's the only reasoning I can find. I get about eight hours of sleep every night. Some days I even get an hour nap.

    But I'm still exhausted.

    Does that answer your question?

Day 16. How old was Jack when he started sleeping through the night and how did you do this?

See this post regarding "CIO." I'm pretty sure the Boy inherited his love for sleep from his Daddy. It just took six months for those genes to kick in.

Day 17. Write about 3 things that make you happy.

    1. My Family - My husband and my son are incredible. Thinking about either one of them puts a smile on my face, and butterflies in my tummy. I can't even believe that they're mine, sometimes. How can one person be so lucky.

Yes, I'm aware how cheesey that sounds, but it's true, and I don't know how else to say it. I'm a lucky girl!

    2. Springtime - Spring to me is a time of possibilities. It's a time of rebirth, growth, prosperity. I love that the days get longer and the sun stays up later. I love the smell of mud and rain and green grass.

And I have a feeling that I'm going to love watching Jack discover spring, too. We went outside today for his first "walk" on the sidewalk. He's not walking unassisted, yet, but he wanted so badly to take off down the sidewalk and jump in every puddle. I think it's going to be a very messy spring at Chez Lushbough!

    3. Peanut Butter M&Ms.

Day 1. I have a three month old and already I'm thinking, I'm going to miss him at this age. Have you felt that way, and what age do you miss the most?

project 31 - days nine, ten and eleven

    Whoa.

I knew I had missed a day, or two, but I didn't realize I was four days behind on the posts! Yikes!

    Let's catch up, shall we?

Day 9. What virtues do you value in yourself?

This is a tough one for me. I tend to overlook or minimize the good qualities in myself. I know that they're in there. I just don't really notice them. And I certainly don't talk about them. So this question made me stop for a moment and take stock.

I am patient. Things that drive other people crazy often don't bother me. I can play with the same toy with Jack over and over and over again. He will tire of it before I will.

I am creative. I love to create. I love to design and write and read. I love to look at what others have created, and gain inspiration from it.

I am assertive. I will stand up for what I know is right, and let my opinion be known. I stand up for myself and for my loved ones.

I am funny. Although, I feel like a huge phoney writing that one because isn't funny really one of those things that other people think you are? If you say you're funny, isn't that like one step beyond laughing at your own jokes? I don't think you're supposed to say, "I am funny."

Day 10. What are some of your favorite MAC products, and what foundation/powder do you wear?

Oh, MAC. How I love thee. I used to be a total MAC junkie. Then, I started working at an Aveda salon, and I felt like I was cheating on Aveda every time I bought MAC. So I took a hiatus. But I'm a MAC girl at heart.

Some of my favorites in no particular order:

    Viva Glam V lipstick
    naked lunch eye shadow
    patina eye shadow
    star violet eye shadow
    nc20 studiofix
    springsheen blush

Can you tell that I'm into the pinky-browns? I also love, love, love StudioFix Powder plus Foundation. So easy to use, and you can customize the coverage. I should get me some, again.

I don't think I've ever tried a MAC product that I didn't like. I've used the brushes, eye shadow, foundation, lip stick, lip glass, eye liner, mascara, fragrance... Maybe the only thing I haven't tried is the nail polish.

This really makes me want to drive to the nearest MAC counter and get a little make-over. Too bad the closest one is 150+ miles away.

    Love, love, love MAC.

Day 11. Post a recipe. Or if you don't cook, try a new recipe and write about how it turned out (pictures please!).

I ate this weekly when I was pregnant with the Boy. I was pretty sure that my amniotic fluid was turning into wing sauce. Still, I never tire of it.

    Buffalo Chicken Dip

    1 package softened cream cheese
2 cups shredded or cubed chicken (I use rotisserie chicken)
3/4 c. chunky bleu cheese dressing
    1/2 - 3/4 c.hot wing sauce (Frank's hot sauce)
    1/2 package shredded cheddar cheese

Spread cream cheese in bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Mix hot wing sauce, bleu cheese dressing and the chicken, and pour on top of the cream cheese. Top with cheddar cheese.Bake at 400 until cheese is melted and bubbly - about 20 minutes.

I'll post Day 12 later today, and then I'll be all caught up again.

    Whew!

    project 31 - day eight

Day 8. Have a beauty secret (e.g. hair tip, make up tip)? Share, please!

    Every woman has beauty secrets.

    Here are some of mine:

    1. Take a pre-natal vitamin even when you're not trying to conceive or pregnant. They do wonders for your nails and make your hair grow crazy fast.
    2. Aveda Beautifying Composition is a miracle product. You can use it on virtually any part of your body, for virtually any problem. Chapped lips? Beautifying Composition. Dry hair?  Beautifying Composition. Out of eye make-up remover? Beautifying Composition. Preventing stretch marks*? Beautifying Composition. I use it for everything. And it smells amazing.
    3. Find a good stylist and hang on to him/her. Tip well, and visit regularly. If they try to move away, do everything in your power to ensure that they are unable to do so, up to and including sabotaging home sales, new job opportunities and/or personal relationships that threaten to take them away from you.
    4. Curling your eyelashes instantly makes them look longer and fuller. Accidentally ripping out your eyelashes whilst curling them has the opposite effect. Curl carefully.
    5. Sunscreen.
I used to care way more about beauty and make-up and hair. Then I had a baby.

And I swore that I wouldn't become that Mom you see being sabotaged by Stacy and Clinton, but I can totally see how easily that could happen. It's so easy to throw on jeans and a sweatshirt and call that dressed for the day.

I still won't leave the house without make-up on, but I'm guessing that if/when we have second (or third or fourth..) baby, that may change. Then all you Moms of Multiples will have to give me your beauty secrets.

*Yeah, yeah... I know that stretch marks are genetic and there's nothing you can do to prevent them and yadda yadda yadda. But I rubbed Beautifying Composition on my big ole pregnant belly every day for over 30 weeks, and I got zero stretch marks. Just sayin'.

Day 1. I have a three month old and already I'm thinking, I'm going to miss him at this age. Have you felt that way, and what age do you miss the most?
Day 2. What makes you uniquely you?

    project 31 - day seven

Day 7. Do you believe in the "cry until he sleeps" method?

    The short answer is "yes."

The longer, more truthful answer is, "sort of."

I struggled with this issue. I mean, really struggled.

I soul searched. I talked to John. I looked to my trusted girl friends for advice. I asked my Mom, my Grandma, my neighbor. I read books. I Googled. I posted on Internet forums. I cried it out, a little.

Jack and I co-slept for the first five months of Jacks' life. It was various shades of lovely and extremely difficult. I really loved being so close to my baby. It was easy to roll over and nurse him in the middle of the night, both of us just awake enough to get the job done and drift off to sleep again. It was so sweet to wake up next to him, a little snuggle bug of new baby goodness. It felt right.

At the same time, it was so difficult. John was sleeping in the guest bedroom for most of those five months. We began to feel like roommates. I missed him. I missed being by him. And I'm sure John felt a little bit left out, marginalized. I also ended up being the sole nighttime parent, which was exhausting.

Jack was getting more and more restless as the weeks went on. It took forever to get him to fall asleep. The only way he would go down was by walking and bouncing around the house, followed by nursing to sleep. And most times, the minute I put him on the bed, he would wake up screaming and we would have to start the cycle all over again. He would wake up every forty-five minutes to nurse. The shades of lovely were becoming harder to distinguish through the glaring exhaustion of sleep deprivation.

John and I both agreed: something had to change. We just didn't know what or how.

I worried about this so-called "cry it out" method. I thought for sure Jack's little heart would break. Or he would feel completely abandoned. Or he would hate us in the morning. Or he would hate us later in life. Or he would cry so hard he would puke. I'm sure there were a million more things, but you get the idea. I was scared. I didn't know if I was strong enough, let alone whether Jack was strong enough.

But I was so tired. So completely and utterly drained from waking up every 45 minutes all night long for two and a half months. I was fried. At the end of my rope. Willing to try just about anything.

And I read the "no cry" books. Or at least, I tried to read them. I had the attention span of a two year old at that point, and my reading comprehension wasn't much better. I needed help now, not over the course of the next twelve weeks.

John and I agreed to try "cry it out." We also agreed that we'd transition Jack to his room and his crib at the same time. And we set a time limit that we were comfortable with - if he wasn't asleep within an hour, we would be done for the night.

I called my Mom and Dad, and invited them over for dinner and moral support. I knew that this would be hard for us, and I worried about giving in too soon or messing it up and making things worse. I wanted experts there to help us.

That night, we did our bedtime routine as usual - bath, book, nursing, cuddling - and we put him in his crib, smooched him, told him we loved him, and left the room. Jack babbled for a minute or two, taking in the novelty of the situation. I'm sure at this point he expected us to come back in and get him. When he realized we weren't coming back, he started to cry. That's when we normally would have gone back in, picked him up, rocked him, nursed him more... Anything to get the crying to stop.

Instead, we sat outside on the back deck and started the timer.

The first time, we set the timer for five minutes. We could hear Jack through the open bedroom window, and honestly, it was heartbreaking. That was a long five minutes. When the timer went off, John went into Jack's room and rubbed his back, smooched on him, told him he loved him, and then left the room again. This time, the crying started immediately.

We put another five minutes on the timer.

My parents reassured us and tried to distract us with conversation. But the second five minutes were just as hard as the first five. When the timer went off the second time, we both went upstairs to Jacks' room. Just as we reached for the doorknob, we realized that Jack was quiet. We waited a minute or two, and nothing.

    Silence.

That night, he only woke up twice to nurse. It was a miracle.

The following night, we only had to go in once to reassure him. The night after that, no crying. Since then, the kid has been a champion faller-asleeper. And I can't point to any negative consequences. I'm sure at some point he will hate us, but I'm confident that it will be for some other grievance. This one has already been forgotten, I'm sure.

So, do I believe in the "cry until he sleeps" method? Sort of.

I guess that all I can tell you is that what I described above worked for us. I know it doesn't work for every parent or for every baby; but for us, it was what all three of us needed at that point. I certainly don't believe in letting a baby cry unchecked for long periods of time. And there's definitely an age at which babies are too young to self-soothe, and so any form of CIO will be ineffective at the very least, and potentially even harmful. I would say if you're going to do it, do some research first. Decide whether a CIO method is right for you and your partner and your baby. If you have concerns, ask a trusted friend, your pediatrician, or someone who's been there before. And if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

Jack needed his own space, and a little help with learning to soothe himself. Mommy and Daddy needed to get back into the same bedroom. Mommy needed some sleep. And that was how we got it.

    project 31 - day six

Day 6. Your most embarrassing moment

Either I don't embarrass easily, or I'm not prone to embarrassing moments. Or perhaps it's my weird memory at work again and I just don't remember them. I'm having a very hard time thinking of an embarrassing moment.

I'm sure the Universe will take this opportunity to prove me wrong on both theories listed above.

The only thing I can think of was when I was fifteen years old and I had to be hospitalized for a bowel obstruction. I had been so sick for so long, and I was in and out of the ER and the doctor's office. Finally, after being totally miserable for weeks, I was admitted to the hospital and told I would need emergency surgery. I remember being introduced to the resident who would be on my case and thinking how cute he was. Then I immediately remembered that I hadn't shaved my legs in weeks. I was so embarrassed that this cute young doctor was going to see my hairy legs. I could have died.

I mean, I literally could have died. I was so sick. But I also could have figuratively died of embarrassment about my hairy legs.

The ironic part was that I don't remember being embarrassed that this cute young doctor was going to see my bare butt, up close and personal, along with all the glamour that goes along with that end of the body and a bowel obstruction.

The mind works in mysterious ways. The teenage mind even more so, apparently.

project 31 - days four and five

Project 31 via Bringing up Bumble continues with day four and day five. Since the hostess took the liberty of switching out day five with day thirteen, I followed suit.

Day 4. Style 31. Post a pic of you in your favorite outfit.

This one was nearly impossible for me. First of all, I have very few photos of myself. Secondly, the photos I do have don't typically showcase an "outfit." Thirdly, I don't really have a favorite outfit.

So, I wore this yesterday to the Children's Museum. I like the shirt. I like the scarf. I like the Boy as an accessory. Let's call this Day Four done.

Maybe I'll get redressed in this outfit and snap a photo at some point just so I can feel better about putting in some effort into Day Four.

    Maybe.

    Day 5. A YouTube video

This video always puts a smile on my face. "One day I'm gonna whistle?"

project 31 - days one, two and three

I found this project over at Bringing Up Bumble, and thought it looked like fun. I'm starting a few days late, so I'm doing a couple of days in a row to catch up.

Day 1. I have a three month old and already I'm thinking, I'm going to miss him at this age. Have you felt that way, and what age do you miss the most?

I pretty much say, "I'm going to miss him at this age" every single month. That's why I try to take a lot of photos, and blog a little to keep some kind of record of it. It really is incredible how quickly they grow and change. Makes me tear up a little just thinking about it.

Jack is only eleven months old, so I don't really feel like we've gone through a vast array of ages and stages. And so far, they've all been truly mind-blowing. There have definitely been moments in each of the stages that I look back on and miss already...

I do miss that new baby smell. The first few weeks when he was just a little puddle of love and snuggles went by in a flash. Of course, John and I were petrified for most of it; so, it would be nice to go back knowing what we know now and redo that first month. I feel like we'd be able to enjoy it a bit more, instead of feeling so helpless.

Now that Jack is getting more mobile (crawling and walking with assistance), I'm starting to miss the days where I could put him on the floor with a few toys around him, walk away for a minute, and know that he'd be there when I came back. This new phase of mobility makes going to the bathroom in semi-private a thing of the past.

Day 2. What makes you uniquely you?

Day two and already a toughie, huh?

I suppose what makes me uniquely me is a combination of my character traits and my learned skills. So, let's make a little list, shall we?
    • I have a knack for words - remembering vocab words, how to spell words, learning foreign words, etc. This makes me a rather formidable Scrabble opponent.
    • I have a strange memory. I tend to forget details of important events (our wedding, Jack's birth, my graduation); but I remember what I bought at the grocery store last time I was there. This is why it's good for me to blog and take lots of photos.
    • I like my desserts to be chocolate, not fruity. If it's fruity, it's not dessert. It's fruit.
    • I'm a wanna-be photographer. I'm trying to learn how to use our camera better and become more skilled in Photoshop. It's a slow process.
    • I hate belly buttons. They're weird. And I hate having mine touched.
    • I also hate "half socks." This is when the sock is really slouchy and hanging off the end of the toe. It makes me kinda sweaty and barfy just typing this.
    • I'm a knitter and a spinner.
    • I also dabble in other crafts such as lampwork (making glass beads), painting, and jewelry making.
    • I've got good hair and good eyebrows.
    • My teeth were so messed up that I had braces for eight years. Maybe I just had a bad orthodontist.
    • I'm a procrastinator.
    • I'm a terrible housekeeper, but I'm also terribly embarrassed by that fact so I force myself to invite people over just so I'll have to clean the house. Looks like I need to invite some people over again soon...
    • I'm addicted to Facebook, and I'm okay with that. It's probably the least harmful thing I've ever been addicted to.
    • I have a fleck of gold in the iris of my left eye and a fleck of brown in the iris of my right eye. My eyes are hazel.
    • I am a night owl, but I'm evolving into an early bird out of necessity.
There's so much more, but I won't continue to bore you with it... Plus, it's time for bed. Because even though the night owl part of me wants to stay up, the early bird part is reminding me that we'll be getting up, well, you know. Early.

    tuesday

    Tuesday was a good day.

it started with lots of smiles.

    we practiced walking, a lot.

    we visited Daddy at work.

we walked through the skywalks because it was too chilly to walk outside.

we stopped at the bread store on the way home and ate a sample.

    we snuggled.

we put on our slippers and watched a show.

    Tuesday was a good day.
